JAPANESE SCIENTIST WINS NOBEL PRIZE IN MEDICINE
Japan has a new Nobel laureate.
Sakaguchi Shimon is one of three winners of this year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
The Nobel Assembly says the three scientists discovered how the immune system is kept in check.
Through years of back-and-forth research, they identified the system’s so-called security guards, known as “regulatory T cells.”
Those prevent our immune cells from attacking our own body.
Sakaguchi kicked off this research in 1995, when he first identified the unknown cells.
He’s now affiliated with the University of Osaka.

The research is expected to lead to new treatments for cancer and autoimmune diseases.
